With no doubt, Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori are two of the prettiest people you’re going to see on screen.
Hrithik is amazingly handsome and director Anurag Basu frames him in the tightest of tight close-ups. There is of course the obligatory dance sequence and bare torso scene but even in moments of anguish, Hrithik’s blue-green eyes are ablaze. Barbara is lovely with real texture and a feisty spirit. Together they are so luminous that the frame lights up when they are in it. Their crackling chemistry keeps Kites elevated.
Developed by Basu, from a story by Rakesh Roshan who has also produced the film, Kites is about Jai and Natasha, two street-smart hustlers who are marrying into a rich and brutal Las Vegas family purely for the money. Of course their gold-digging scheme falls apart when they fall in love with each other. Basu builds this hesitant relationship beautifully.
They can’t speak each other’s tongue—he doesn’t know Spanish and she can’t speak English—but their smoldering looks are louder than words.
They recognize their path is fraught with danger but they can’t put the brakes on their aspiration. Predictably the bad guys find out and then the chase begins.Which is pretty much where Kites starts to falter. The weakest link in the film is the villains, who seem like the NRI cousins of the Thakurs from Rakesh Roshan’s Karan Arjun.
The entire family is dolefully underwritten and badly enacted. At one point, the father, played by Kabir Bedi and the son, played by newcomer Nick Brown, are egging on Jai to kill a man.
The second half of Kites has way too much of the son who chases his fiancée and her new lover over stunningly stark new Mexico landscapes.
Meanwhile those two have morphed into Bonnie and Clyde – they rob banks and steal cars. And the plot settles into a repetitive cycle of chase scene—love-scene—chase scene.
Kites is extravagantly produced, painstakingly crafted and in its own way, determined. The Roshans and Basu are trying to stretch the boundaries of the Bollywood love story. Hrithik Roshan is spectacular. And yet the film doesn’t become more than the sum of its parts because the second half is flat and in places, outright foolish.
Still I recommend that you see Kites. It’s far from brilliant or even fully satisfying but it’s easily one of the better Bollywood films I’ve seen this year.
Pakistan has restricted access to a number of sites as part of a crackdown on websites viewed as hosting anti-Islamic material.
Social network facebook was temporarily blocked in the country on Wednesday, in reaction to a competition held on the site that concerned caricatures of the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (saww). Although the BBC reports that the competition sparked numerous protests in Pakistan, facebook said that the content did not violate its terms, stating:
“While the content does not violate our terms, we do understand it may not be legal in some countries.
“In cases like this, the approach is sometimes to hamper certain content from being shown in particular countries.”
Further to the facebook annoyance, Pakistan blocked video sharing site YouTube, citing its “growing sacrilegious content” as grounds. The site was previously blocked in Pakistan two years ago, after videos it hosted were deemed to be hateful to Muslim viewers.
It is unclear whether Pakistan will seek to block these sites permanently, and whether users will be able to find ways around these restrictions despite the consequences. That certainly seems to be the idea of the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority, which has ordered internet service providers in the country to “completely shut down” the offending websites.
According to the PTA’s statement, the authority “has thus far blocked more than 450 links on the internet containing derogatory material.”
It is a admirable action of Pak’s Government to block this website because although facebook has declared that these material is not its violation of restriction but it is noticed, when we report any page to facebook owners, there are many options are appeared on page. Attacks on specific group and vulgar language are also conditions on facebook’s laws. So as Muslim, I raise a question this group is attacking on the Believes of hundreds Muslim then why facebook is not taking step against that group.
Is facebook is becoming backbone in front of this group and playing the role as Anti-Muslim Web?

It’s three days until Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride.
Rainbow flags are waving along Ocean Boulevard and parts of Shoreline Drive are being transformed into a festival setting with bleachers, vending booths and stages.
Long Beach Pride takes place 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Marina Green Park and Rainbow Lagoon along Shoreline Drive.
70,000 expected
This year’s arrogance festival is estimated to draw 70,000 people, with 30,000 people expected to watch the parade, Long Beach Pride Co-President Sergio Macias said.
It’s the city’s second-most attended event – the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach is first with more than 170,000 spectators.
Seventy-six percent of pride’s revelers visit from outside Long Beach and one more 13 percent are from outside California. The event also draws travelers from Norway, Australia, London also Switzerland, Macias said.
Long Beach Pride also is an economic engine for the city, generating about $10 million of direct spend to Long Beach and over $20 million to the regional economy, according to a Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Festival Economic shock Study statement.
Road closures are on the way for the big event. For the festival, Shoreline Drive from Shoreline Village Drive east to Ocean Boulevard will close up at 7 p.m. Friday and reopen at 8 a.m. Monday.
